About the Opportunity

Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, is establishing its 2026 Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Internship Roster. This opportunity is designed for early-career professionals and postgraduate students interested in contributing to education programmes for children and youth affected by conflict, disasters, and displacement.

Hosted by UNICEF, the internship provides practical experience in monitoring, evaluation, learning, and evidence generation within a team dedicated to ensuring education remains accessible in crisis contexts.




Internship Overview

This full-time position (35 hours per week) operates under the supervision of ECW's M&E team. Interns are assigned a portfolio of ECW-supported programmes based on their language skills, regional knowledge, and analytical strengths. Work involves data collection, analysis, reporting, and knowledge generation to support ECW's 2025 Annual Results Report and broader learning initiatives.

The role offers flexibility in scheduling and can be completed remotely, though office space may be available in Geneva or New York for those who prefer in-person arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

Annual Results Report Contribution

  • Conduct data quality checks across programme reports and results databases
  • Liaise with programme managers and grantees on reporting requirements
  • Code qualitative data to identify change pathways and outcome patterns
  • Draft selected sections of the Annual Results Report focusing on strategic objectives

Knowledge Synthesis & Organizational Learning

  • Conduct literature reviews and evidence mapping in Education in Emergencies (EiE)
  • Support programme reviews using ECW's Availability of Evidence database
  • Develop qualitative data collection protocols, including interviews and focus groups
  • Organize learning exchanges, webinars, and cross-country knowledge-sharing sessions
  • Produce knowledge products such as briefs, blogs, and presentations

Data Systems & Information Management

  • Maintain databases and tracking tools for monitoring evidence use
  • Test and refine ECW's new Information Management platform
  • Ensure alignment with ECW's data standards and M&E processes

Individual Project

Midway through the internship, each intern will design and implement a small project advancing M&E, learning, or knowledge management priorities.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 3 years) from a bachelor's or master's programme
  • Have academic background in education, international development, social sciences, statistics, M&E, or related fields
  • Demonstrate experience in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis (Excel proficiency required; R, STATA, Power Query, or Kobo experience is advantageous)
  • Show ability to synthesize information and draft reports in English
  • Be fluent in English (proficiency in French or Spanish is an advantage)
  • Meet UNICEF's safeguarding and internship eligibility requirements

Working Conditions & Compensation

  • Full-time commitment (35 hours per week) with flexible arrangements to accommodate academic schedules
  • Up to 2.5 days off per month permitted
  • Monthly stipend:
    • USD 1,700 for positions in Geneva, New York, or Copenhagen
    • 70% of GS-3 Step 1 monthly salary for other duty stations
  • Interns are responsible for arranging necessary visas or permits if applying from the United States or Switzerland
